Da Huang (Rheum palmatum), the Chinese or turkey rhubarb, is a massive perennial of the knotweed family, Polygonaceae, native to the mountains of Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Tibet at 2,000 to 4,000 meters, and grown there as a crop. From a thick crown it produces huge, deeply palmately lobed leaves up to 60 centimeters across on stout reddish stalks, and in summer sends up a hollow flowering stem 1.5 to 2 meters tall topped with a dense panicle of tiny greenish-white to red flowers. The rhizome and root are heavy and yellow-brown, marbled orange and white when cut, bitter and astringent. We extract the dried rhizome and root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
