Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatherum gracile), the lophatherum or bamboo-leaf grass, is a perennial of the grass family, Poaceae, native to shaded hillsides, forest edges, and streambanks across southern and eastern China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and India. It grows 40 to 100 centimeters in loose clumps, with wiry stems and broad, lance-shaped leaves 5 to 20 centimeters long that look so much like bamboo foliage that the Chinese name means light bamboo leaf. In summer it sends up slender, open panicles of small, bristle-tipped spikelets, and underground the fibrous roots swell into small spindle-shaped tubers. The dried leaf is pale green, papery, and faintly sweet. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
