Frequently Asked Questions about Dan Zhu Ye Extract
What is Dan Zhu Ye / lophatherum leaf (Lophatherum gracile) extract?
Dan Zhu Ye is the Chinese name for the dried leaf of Lophatherum gracile, a slender grass of the Poaceae family; the name is sometimes rendered "bland bamboo leaf" or "bamboo grass," though the plant is NOT a true bamboo. In pharmacy the herb is known as Herba Lophatheri. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried leaf, taken by the drop. (Note: some older labels misspell the botanical name as "Lophathenum"; the correct genus is Lophatherum.) Please note the label states it is not to be used during pregnancy; see the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lophatherum gracile leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The leaf inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Dan Zhu Ye the same as bamboo?
No - and this is a common point of confusion. Dan Zhu Ye is Lophatherum gracile, a grass sometimes nicknamed "bamboo grass" or "bland bamboo leaf," but it is NOT a true bamboo. It is different from our Bamboo product, which is the shoot of Bambusa vulgaris, and from our Zhu Ru / Bamboo Shavings, which are the shavings of Bambusa. It is also distinct from true bamboo leaf (Zhu Ye, usually Phyllostachys). We label ours clearly as Lophatherum gracile leaf (Herba Lophatheri) so you know exactly which plant you are getting.
How do I use Dan Zhu Ye / lophatherum liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Because it is a cooling, urine-promoting herb, drink plenty of water while using it, and keep to short-term use. Do not use it during pregnancy. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Dan Zhu Ye right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy and nursing: the label states this product is not to be used during pregnancy, and it is best avoided while breastfeeding. Fluids and diuretic effect: Dan Zhu Ye traditionally promotes urination, so drink plenty of water, be mindful of your fluid and electrolyte balance, and use caution if you take diuretic ("water pill") medication such as hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide, since combining them may increase water and electrolyte loss. Digestive note: because it is cooling in nature, it is best avoided if you have a weak digestion with loose stools. Keep to the suggested serving and short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
