Desmodium (Desmodium illinoense), the Illinois tick trefoil, is an upright perennial of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to tallgrass prairies, savannas, and roadsides of the central United States from Minnesota and Michigan south to Oklahoma and Texas. It grows 1 to 1.5 meters with a single stiff, hairy stem, trifoliate leaves of oval leaflets 5 to 10 centimeters long with a netted surface, and in midsummer a tall, open raceme of small pink to lavender pea flowers that bumblebees trip open. The pods are flat, triangular-jointed, and covered in hooked hairs that stick fast to fur and clothing. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
