Frequently Asked Questions about Desmodium Extract
What is Desmodium (Desmodium illinoense) herb extract?
Desmodium here is a liquid extract of the dried herb of Desmodium illinoense, the Illinois tick-trefoil (also called prairie tick-trefoil, Illinois tick-clover or beggar-ticks), a native perennial legume of the North American prairies in the Fabaceae family - its hooked, "sticky" seed pods are where the "tick-trefoil" and "beggar-ticks" names come from. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is Desmodium illinoense, a North American prairie species that is a different plant from Desmodium adscendens (the African and Amazonian medicinal desmodium), which we sell separately - so it should not be assumed to share that plant's traditional uses; and Desmodium illinoense itself has been little studied, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Desmodium illinoense herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as Desmodium adscendens or beggar-ticks?
No - the name "desmodium" covers many different species, and the difference matters. This product is Desmodium illinoense, a North American prairie tick-trefoil. The desmodium best known in herbal supplements is a different species, Desmodium adscendens, from West Africa and the Amazon, which is traditionally associated with the liver and breathing - we sell it separately, and you should not assume our prairie species shares those uses. Other medicinal desmodiums include Desmodium gangeticum (Shalparni in Ayurveda) and Desmodium molliculum (an Andean plant); ours is none of these. It is also worth noting that the genus Desmodium has historically included some species rich in tryptamine-type compounds, though many of those have been reclassified into other genera. Finally, "beggar-ticks" is also a common name for plants in the genus Bidens, which are unrelated. We label ours clearly as Desmodium illinoense so you know exactly which plant you have.
How do I use Desmodium liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to modest, short-term use since this species is little studied. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Desmodium right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Desmodium illinoense is a native prairie legume with no well-documented toxicity, but it has been little studied, so a cautious approach is sensible. Limited data: keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use, and do not assume it has the traditional uses of the medicinal Desmodium adscendens - it is a different species. Medications: the genus Desmodium has historically included species with naturally active plant compounds, so if you take any medication - especially antidepressants such as MAO inhibitors - consult your practitioner before use. Allergy: it is a legume (Fabaceae), so avoid it if you are sensitive to legumes. Pregnancy and nursing: because safety data are lacking, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Serious symptoms: do not use it to self-treat a liver problem, a breathing problem or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Desmodium (Desmodium Illinoense) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
