Du Huo (Angelica pubescens, the Chinese source being the form Angelica pubescens f. biserrata, often classified as its own species Angelica biserrata) is a stout perennial of the carrot family, Apiaceae, native to mountain forests and streambanks of Sichuan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Anhui in central China, where it is grown at 1,200 to 2,000 meters. It stands 1 to 2 meters with a thick, hollow, purplish stem, large twice-divided leaves with doubly toothed leaflets, and broad compound umbels of tiny white flowers. The root is thick and branched, grey-brown and wrinkled outside, with a strong aromatic smell and a bitter, pungent, slightly numbing taste. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
