Du Huo (Angelica pubescens) - Pubescent Angelica Root, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free (glycerite) liquid extract of the dried root of Angelica pubescens (form biserrata; pubescent or doubleteeth angelica, Apiaceae family), known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Du Huo.

  • Botanical name: Angelica pubescens Maxim. f. biserrata (syn. Angelica biserrata)
  • Plant part: Dried root
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Gluten free. Suggested use: 20-30 drops in 2 oz water

This is Angelica pubescens (Du Huo) - a different species from Dong Quai / Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis, the blood tonic), from Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) and from European angelica (Angelica archangelica), all of which we sell separately.

Important safety information - please read before use

Sun sensitivity (photosensitivity). Du Huo root naturally contains furanocoumarins (such as bergapten and xanthotoxin). These are photosensitizing - they can make your skin react more strongly to sunlight or UV, which may cause a rash, redness, swelling or darkened patches on sun-exposed skin. While taking it, limit strong sun and tanning-bed exposure and use sun protection.

  • Blood clotting / surgery: Du Huo may affect blood clotting - ask your practitioner before use if you take blood thinners or are preparing for surgery.
  • Medications: its furanocoumarins may change how some medications are processed - consult your practitioner if you take any medication.
  • Drowsiness: it can have a mild sedative effect - do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. Keep to the suggested serving; do not exceed it.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Refrigerate after opening.

Frequently Asked Questions about Du Huo Extract
What is Du Huo / pubescent angelica (Angelica pubescens) root extract?
Du Huo is a liquid extract of the dried root of Angelica pubescens (form biserrata), a plant of the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family known as pubescent or doubleteeth angelica, and in traditional Chinese herbalism as Du Huo. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural constituents, including coumarins such as osthole and the furanocoumarins bergapten and xanthotoxin, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. Please note two things: this is Angelica pubescens, a different species from Dong Quai and Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis, the well-known blood tonic), from Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) and from European angelica (Angelica archangelica); and because it contains furanocoumarins, it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Angelica pubescens root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both, especially the note about sun sensitivity.
How is Du Huo different from Dong Quai and the other angelicas?
They are all in the genus Angelica but are different species with different traditional roles, so it is worth being clear. Du Huo is Angelica pubescens (pubescent angelica root), used traditionally for the lower body and joints. Dong Quai and Dang Gui are both Angelica sinensis, the familiar "female" blood tonic - a different species that we sell separately. Bai Zhi is Angelica dahurica, and European or garden angelica is Angelica archangelica; both are again separate species and products. Because the common word "angelica" is shared by all of them, we label ours by its full botanical name (Angelica pubescens) and its Chinese name (Du Huo) so it is not confused with Dong Quai or the others.
How do I use Du Huo / pubescent angelica root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use, especially the sun-sensitivity note. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Du Huo right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this before use. Du Huo root naturally contains furanocoumarins (such as bergapten and xanthotoxin), which are "photosensitizing" - they can make your skin react more strongly to sunlight or UV, potentially causing a rash, redness, swelling or darkened patches on sun-exposed skin. While taking it, limit strong sun and tanning-bed exposure and use sun protection. A few more cautions: Du Huo may affect blood clotting, so ask your practitioner before use if you take blood thinners or are preparing for surgery; its furanocoumarins may also change how some medications are processed, so consult your practitioner if you take any medication; and it can have a mild sedative effect, so do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
