Dulse (Palmaria palmata) is not a land plant but a red seaweed of the Palmariaceae family, growing on rocks and on the stalks of kelp along cold North Atlantic shores from Norway, Iceland, and Ireland to Nova Scotia and Maine. It forms flat, leathery, hand-shaped fronds 20 to 50 centimeters long, deep red to purple-brown, that fan out from a small disc holdfast and divide into broad, rounded lobes. Harvested at low tide in summer and sun-dried, it becomes thin and papery, with a salty, smoky, slightly nutty flavor that makes it a chewed snack in Ireland and Atlantic Canada. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
