About Ecklonia kurome

Ecklonia (Ecklonia kurome), a kelp known in China as Kun Bu and in Japan as kurome, is not a land plant but a brown seaweed of the Lessoniaceae family, growing on rocky seabeds just below the low-tide line along the coasts of Japan, Korea, and the East China Sea. From a branched holdfast rises a short, stiff stalk that flattens into a broad, leathery, olive-brown blade 1 to 2 meters long, split into several wavy, finger-like lobes. Dried, it turns blackish and shrinks into thick, curled, salty sheets that swell and soften again in water, with the sea-and-umami flavor of its relative kombu. We extract the dried whole alga.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
