What is Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum biflorum) rhizome?
Solomon's Seal is a graceful woodland perennial with an arching stem and pairs of small, bell-like flowers that dangle beneath it, botanically Polygonatum biflorum, in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The part used here is the rhizome - the knobby underground stem, which is our wildcrafted raw material. This is a rhizome liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced material. A few points help avoid confusion. Ours is the true, American Solomon's seal (Polygonatum biflorum), which is different from the Chinese species used in Chinese herbalism, such as Yu Zhu (Polygonatum odoratum) and Huang Jing (Polygonatum sibiricum), and it is also different from false Solomon's seal (Maianthemum), a look-alike from a different genus. This is a whole-rhizome extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Polygonatum biflorum rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the rhizome's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is this true or false Solomon's seal, and is it the Chinese kind?
Good questions, since the name is shared by several plants. Our product is true Solomon's seal, Polygonatum biflorum, the American species. It is different from false Solomon's seal (Maianthemum racemosum, once called Smilacina), which is a completely different genus that looks similar and grows in the same woodlands - a very common source of confusion for foragers. Our species is also different from the Chinese Solomon's seals used in Chinese herbalism, known as Yu Zhu (Polygonatum odoratum) and Huang Jing (Polygonatum sibiricum); these are related but distinct species with their own traditions. It is also worth noting that Solomon's seal is related to lily of the valley (Convallaria), which is toxic, so correct identification matters, and that the part used is the rhizome, not the berries, which are not for use. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Polygonatum biflorum) and plant part (rhizome).
How do I use Solomon's Seal liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
