Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides, formerly Chenopodium ambrosioides) is a strongly scented annual or short-lived perennial of the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae, native to Mexico and Central America and now weedy across the warm Americas. It grows to about 1 m with toothed, lance-shaped leaves and dense spikes of tiny green flowers. The whole plant smells of turpentine, citrus and mint, a flavor that defines traditional Mexican black-bean cooking. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
