Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a woody climbing shrub of the soapberry family, Sapindaceae, native to the Amazon basin and cultivated chiefly in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Bahia. It has large, compound leaves of five leaflets and clusters of small white flowers, followed by bright red capsules that split open to show a black seed half-covered in white aril, a fruit that looks like an eye. The roasted seeds are bitter, astringent and rich in caffeine, and flavor Brazil's national soft drinks. We extract the dried seed.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
