Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis), the Baikal skullcap, is a perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the dry grassy slopes of northern China, Mongolia, Korea and the Lake Baikal region of Siberia. It grows 30-60 cm tall with square stems, narrow lance-shaped leaves and one-sided spikes of blue-violet, two-lipped flowers with the hooded calyx typical of skullcaps. The thick taproot is golden yellow inside, which gives the Chinese name meaning "yellow gold", with a bitter taste. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
