About Rubia cordifolia

Indian Madder (Rubia cordifolia), the manjistha of India, is a perennial climbing herb of the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to India, China, Japan and tropical Africa. Its rough, four-angled stems scramble over shrubs with whorls of four heart-shaped leaves and tiny greenish-white flowers followed by purple-black berries. The slender, branching roots are red inside and yield a red dye that colored cloth across Asia for centuries. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
