About Sophora flavescens

Ku Shen (Sophora flavescens), the shrubby sophora, is a deciduous subshrub of the legume family, Fabaceae, native to China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and eastern Siberia. It grows 1-2 m tall with pinnate leaves of 11-25 narrow leaflets and upright spikes of pale yellow or cream pea flowers followed by slender, beaded pods. The long, cylindrical root is yellowish-brown outside and pale yellow inside with an intensely bitter taste, which the Chinese name meaning "bitter ginseng" records. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
