Long Pepper (Piper longum), the pippali of India, is a slender climbing perennial of the pepper family, Piperaceae, native to the Indo-Malayan region and grown in India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It trails and climbs with heart-shaped, dark green leaves and bears cylindrical spikes 2-4 cm long of minute flowers that fuse into a single catkin-like fruit. The dried spikes are grey-black, knobby and rod-shaped, with a taste hotter than black pepper and a sweet, earthy scent of cinnamon. We extract the dried whole pepper.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
