Long Yam (Dioscorea collettii var. hypoglauca, long listed as Dioscorea hypoglauca), known in China as bi xie, is a twining perennial vine of the yam family, Dioscoreaceae, native to central and southern China. It climbs with slender stems and triangular to heart-shaped leaves that are pale and bluish beneath, which the name hypoglauca describes, and bears small greenish flowers followed by three-winged capsules. The knotty, branching rhizome is yellowish-brown outside and pale inside with a bitter taste. We extract the dried rhizome.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
