What is Long Yam / Bi Xie (Dioscorea hypoglauca) rhizome extract?
Long Yam is a trade name for the dried rhizome of Dioscorea hypoglauca, a yam of the Dioscoreaceae family that is better known in Chinese tradition as Bi Xie; the rhizome is known in pharmacy as Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried rhizome. It has been classically regarded as a mild, non-toxic herb, and it contains natural steroidal saponins. A couple of points matter: do not exceed the suggested serving, and because safety data in pregnancy are limited, it is best avoided in pregnancy unless advised by your practitioner. Please read the notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Dioscorea hypoglauca rhizome; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The rhizome inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
How is Long Yam different from wild yam, Chinese yam and air yam?
The yam genus (Dioscorea) is large, and we carry several, so the botanical name matters. Long Yam is Dioscorea hypoglauca (Bi Xie). It is different from wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), from Chinese yam and Shan Yao (both Dioscorea polystachya), and - importantly for safety - it is NOT air yam (Dioscorea bulbifera), which is a genuinely toxic species we no longer sell. They are different species with different traditional uses and safety profiles. We label ours clearly as Dioscorea hypoglauca so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Long Yam / Bi Xie liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because it contains natural saponins, do NOT exceed the suggested serving, and keep to short-term use. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
