Lovage (Levisticum officinale) is a tall, robust perennial of the carrot family, Apiaceae, native to the mountains of the eastern Mediterranean and Iran and grown in European kitchen gardens since the Middle Ages. It grows 1.5-2.5 m tall with hollow, ridged stems, large, glossy, deeply divided leaves resembling celery and flat umbels of small greenish-yellow flowers. The whole plant smells and tastes strongly of celery with a warm, slightly musky note, and the thick, grey-brown root is aromatic. We extract the dried leaf and the dried root separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
