About Myristica fragrans

Mace (Myristica fragrans) is the dried aril of the nutmeg tree, an evergreen tree of the nutmeg family, Myristicaceae, native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia and grown in Grenada, Sri Lanka and Kerala. The tree reaches 10-20 m with glossy, dark green leaves and small, pale yellow bell-shaped flowers. Its yellow, apricot-like fruit splits to show a glossy brown seed, the nutmeg, wrapped in a bright scarlet, lacy aril, the mace, which dries to orange-brown and tastes warmer and more delicate than nutmeg. We extract the dried nut and the dried whole arils separately.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
