Frequently Asked Questions about Nutmeg Extract
What is Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) seed extract?
Nutmeg comes from Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree of the family Myristicaceae, originally native to the Moluccas and now grown in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Grenada and elsewhere. The tree's fruit is unusual in yielding two distinct spices: the hard seed kernel, which is nutmeg, and the lacy scarlet aril wrapped around that seed, which is mace. This product is made from the dried seed kernel, commonly called the nut. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents; it is not an isolated compound and it is not nutmeg essential oil. We label it clearly by botanical name and plant part, and we sell mace separately under its own name.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Myristica fragrans seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
What is the difference between nutmeg and mace, and is this the kitchen spice?
Nutmeg and mace come from the same fruit but are different parts of it. Inside the fruit sits a single large seed; the kernel of that seed, dried and hard, is nutmeg. Wrapped around the seed is a lacy scarlet covering called the aril, and that, dried, is mace. They are handled as two separate spices in cooking and as two separate herbs here - we sell mace under its own name, so check the plant part on the page if you want one specifically. As for form: this is a liquid extract of the seed that you take by the drop, not the whole nutmeg you grate over food, not ground nutmeg from the spice rack, and not nutmeg essential oil, which is a concentrated aromatic product intended for external use. We label the botanical name (Myristica fragrans) and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Nutmeg liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving - please read the safety section below before use.
Is Nutmeg extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this before use. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Nutmeg is entirely familiar as a culinary spice, but taken in amounts far above culinary or supplement servings it has caused poisoning requiring medical care, and this is well documented in poison centre records. Stay within the stated serving and do not take more than directed. Excessive consumption may also impair your ability to drive a motor vehicle or operate heavy equipment. Keep this product well out of reach of children. Do not use it during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Nutmeg (Myristica Fragrans) Nut is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
