Mai Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus), the dwarf lilyturf or mondo grass, is a low evergreen perennial of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae, native to China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam and planted worldwide as a grassy ground cover. It forms dense tufts 15-30 cm high of narrow, dark green, grass-like leaves with short spikes of small lilac or white flowers hidden among them and glossy, cobalt-blue berries. Along its fibrous roots hang small, spindle-shaped tubers that are translucent, yellowish-white and sticky-sweet when dried. We extract the dried root and tuber separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
