What is Mondograss / Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus) tuber extract?
Mondograss is a liquid extract of the dried tuber of Ophiopogon japonicus, of the Asparagaceae family, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Mai Men Dong (or Mai Dong) and also called dwarf lilyturf, monkey grass or snake's beard. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Mai Men Dong is a classic yin-nourishing tonic with a good safety record. A note on identity: the same plant is sold under the names Mondograss and Mai Dong, and it is a different plant from Liriope (Shan Mai Dong), a related lilyturf sometimes used as a substitute. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ophiopogon japonicus tuber; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The tuber inside is identical.
Is Mondograss the same as Mai Dong, and is it Liriope (lilyturf)?
Mondograss and Mai Dong (Mai Men Dong) are the same plant - Ophiopogon japonicus - so if you have seen it under either name, it is the same tuber; "mondograss," "dwarf lilyturf" and "monkey grass" are common garden names for it. It is NOT the same as Liriope (Liriope spicata or muscari), a related plant in the same family known in Chinese medicine as Shan Mai Dong; the two look alike and are sometimes sold interchangeably, but authentic Mai Dong is Ophiopogon japonicus. We label ours clearly as Ophiopogon japonicus tuber so it is not confused with Liriope.
How do I use Mondograss liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.

Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Men Dong) is a yin-nourishing tonic with a good safety record and no well-known adverse drug interactions, but a few sensible notes apply. Traditional-medicine note: because it is a moistening, cooling herb, it is generally avoided by those with weak, cold or damp digestion or with loose stools or diarrhea (spleen deficiency or dampness). Pregnancy and nursing: as a precaution do not use concentrated extract during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Keep to the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children.
