Mei Gui Hua (Rosa rugosa), the rugosa or Japanese rose, is a dense, suckering shrub of the rose family, Rosaceae, native to the coasts of China, Japan, Korea and the Russian Far East and naturalized on dunes of northern Europe and New England. It grows 1-2 m tall with very prickly stems, deeply wrinkled, glossy leaves and large, single, intensely fragrant magenta or white flowers followed by fat, tomato-like red hips. The flower buds are picked half-open and dried to purple-red, strongly scented cones. We extract the dried bud.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
