Mesquite (Prosopis pallida), the Peruvian mesquite, huarango or kiawe, is a thorny, drought-tolerant tree of the legume family, Fabaceae, native to the dry coasts of Peru, Colombia and Ecuador and naturalized across the Hawaiian lowlands since 1828. It grows 8-20 m with a spreading crown, feathery bipinnate leaves and fuzzy, yellow catkins of tiny flowers that bees turn into kiawe honey. The flat, yellow pods are 10-25 cm long with a sweet, mealy pulp, milled to a flour that tastes of caramel and molasses. We extract the dried pods.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
