Frequently Asked Questions about Mesquite Extract
What is Mesquite (Prosopis pallida) pods extract?
Mesquite is a liquid extract of the dried seed pods of Prosopis pallida, the Peruvian mesquite, a tree of the Fabaceae (legume) family also known as algarrobo or huarango. Its pods have long been ground into a naturally sweet flour used as a food across the Americas. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Mesquite pods are a food, so this is offered simply as a botanical pod extract. Two points worth knowing: it is a legume, so it matters if you have relevant allergies; and it is a different species from the other trees also called mesquite (such as Prosopis juliflora), and from the unrelated Jewelweed (Impatiens pallida), which only shares the species word "pallida." Please see the notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Prosopis pallida seed pods; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder, naturally sweet carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The pods inside are identical.
Is this the same as regular mesquite or mesquite flour?
It is the same plant type, but a different form. "Mesquite" covers several related trees in the genus Prosopis - ours is Prosopis pallida, the Peruvian mesquite (algarrobo), while others include Prosopis juliflora, Prosopis glandulosa (honey mesquite) and Prosopis alba. The familiar mesquite flour or powder in stores is the whole ground pod, used as a food; our product is instead a liquid extract of the pods, taken by the drop. So it is not a substitute for mesquite flour as a food, and it is not the mesquite wood used for barbecue smoking. It should also not be confused with Jewelweed (Impatiens pallida), a completely different plant. We label ours clearly as mesquite (Prosopis pallida) pods.
How do I use Mesquite liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder, naturally sweet taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Mesquite right for everyone? Safety information.
Mesquite pods are an ordinary food with a good safety record for most people, but a few notes apply. Allergy: although uncommon, some people are sensitive to mesquite and can react - stop use and seek care if that happens. Digestion: mesquite pods are high in fiber, so taking more than the suggested serving may cause bloating, gas or stomach upset - keep to the serving. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. This is a food-pod extract, not a treatment for any condition - do not use it to self-treat a medical condition; see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
