Muira Puama (Croton echioides), known in Brazil as marapuama, is a shrub or small tree of the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae, native to the Amazon basin and the dry forests of northeastern Brazil. It grows 2-5 m with slender branches, narrow, rough-haired leaves and small greenish flowers in spikes. Its grey-brown bark and roots are hard, fibrous and faintly aromatic with a bitter, astringent taste, and it is one of two unrelated Brazilian plants sold under the name muira puama. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
