What is Muira Puama (Croton echioides) bark extract?
Muira puama here is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Croton echioides, a small Brazilian tree of the Euphorbiaceae family, known as the Northeastern Marapuama. "Muira puama" is a traditional Amazonian name (its old nicknames include "potency wood" and, in Portuguese, "pau-homem") - names only, from which we make no health claims. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: the name "muira puama" is shared by more than one plant, and this one (Croton echioides) is a regional Brazilian substitute for the classic Amazonian muira puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides), which we sell separately; and this plant has been little studied, so please read the safety notes below and treat it accordingly.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Croton echioides bark; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as the classic muira puama, or as croton oil?
It helps to be clear, because the name "muira puama" covers more than one plant. This product is Croton echioides (Euphorbiaceae), the Northeastern Marapuama of Brazil, which has traditionally been used as a regional substitute for the classic Amazonian muira puama, Ptychopetalum olacoides (family Olacaceae) - a different plant that we sell separately. So "muira puama" can mean either species, and we label the botanical clearly so you know which one you have. This is also a good place to note that the genus Croton contains some very different plants: Croton tiglium, the source of croton oil, is a separate toxic species we list only as Ba Dou and only with strong cautions - it is not the same as this bark. We label ours clearly as Croton echioides so it is not confused with Ptychopetalum olacoides or with the toxic croton-oil plant.
How do I use Muira Puama liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
