Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is a thorny, low-branching shrub or small tree of the torchwood family, Burseraceae, native to the dry scrub of Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen and Oman. It grows 3-5 m with stout, spiny branches, papery, peeling grey bark and small trifoliate leaves that drop in the dry season. When the bark is cut, a pale yellow gum resin oozes out and hardens into reddish-brown, irregular tears with a warm, bitter, smoky-balsamic scent, traded as incense since ancient Egypt. We extract the dried gum resin.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
