Frequently Asked Questions about Myrrh Extract
What is myrrh gum resin extract used for?
Myrrh gum resin extract is a dietary supplement made from the oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora myrrha, a small thorny tree in the family Burseraceae native to the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia and Ethiopia. The gum resin is a complex mixture of three main fractions: a volatile oil fraction containing furanosesquiterpenes including furanoeudesma-1,3-diene and lindestrene, the characteristic volatile compounds of Commiphora myrrha resin; a resin fraction containing commiphoric acids, pentacyclic triterpenoid resin acids; and a water-soluble gum fraction of arabinogalactan polysaccharides. Commiphora myrrha gum resin has been used in traditional herbal practices across ancient Egypt, the Middle East, and African herbal medicine for thousands of years. As a dietary supplement, myrrh gum resin extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between myrrh resin drops and myrrh resin tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers myrrh gum resin in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The myrrh resin tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from dried Commiphora myrrha gum resin and are liquid herbal extracts, distinct from myrrh essential oil, which is a separate steam-distilled product derived from the same resin source.
What is Commiphora myrrha?
Commiphora myrrha, commonly known as myrrh or gum myrrh, is a small thorny tree or shrub in the family Burseraceae, native to the semi-arid and arid regions of the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia and Ethiopia, and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula including Yemen and Oman. The tree grows 3-4 meters tall with irregular, thorny branching, small trifoliate or unifoliate leaves, and produces small yellowish flowers; the oleo-gum-resin is obtained by making incisions in the bark, from which the resin exudes and hardens into amber-to-reddish-brown irregular masses known commercially as tears. Myrrh is one of the oldest and most historically significant botanical substances: archaeological evidence confirms its use in ancient Egypt as a component of kyphi incense, in the preparation of embalming mixtures, and as a cosmetic ingredient, with documented references in the Ebers Papyrus (circa 1550 BCE). In the Hebrew Bible and Christian tradition, myrrh is among the most frequently mentioned aromatic substances, and is identified as one of the gifts brought to the infant Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. The genus name Commiphora derives from the Greek kommi (gum) and phoros (bearing), meaning gum-bearing. HawaiiPharm's myrrh resin tincture is made from dried Commiphora myrrha oleo-gum-resin.
How do I use myrrh liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking myrrh supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing; Commiphora myrrha gum resin has documented emmenagogue properties and has traditionally been used to stimulate uterine activity; its use during pregnancy is contraindicated. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take blood-thinning or anticoagulant medications, as myrrh resin compounds may have additive anticoagulant effects. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take diabetes medications or insulin, as myrrh resin may affect blood glucose levels. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have kidney or liver conditions, or take medications metabolized by the liver. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha) Gum Resin is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation

  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
