Oregano (Origanum vulgare), the wild marjoram, is a bushy, aromatic perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean, Europe and western Asia and naturalized across North America. It grows 30-80 cm tall with square, often purplish stems, small oval leaves and loose, flat-topped clusters of tiny pink-purple flowers in summer that are a favorite of bees and butterflies. The leaves have the warm, peppery, slightly bitter scent of carvacrol and thymol that defines Italian and Greek cooking, strongest in plants from hot, dry hillsides. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
