Pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata) is a low evergreen subshrub of the heath family, Ericaceae, native to the cool forests of North America, Europe and Asia, where it grows in dry, sandy conifer woods. Its creeping rhizomes send up stems 10 to 30 cm tall bearing whorls of leathery, dark green, sharply toothed leaves shaped like narrow wedges. In summer a small umbel of nodding, waxy pink to white flowers with a central green ovary rises above the foliage. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
