Frequently Asked Questions about Pipsissewa Extract
What is Pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata) extract?
Pipsissewa extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried leaf of Chimaphila umbellata, an evergreen woodland plant in the heath family (Ericaceae) native to North America and Eurasia. It is known by many folk names, including prince's pine, ground holly, love-in-winter, rheumatic weed, and bitter wintergreen. Our extract is made from the leaf and is offered in two forms: an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material from the USA. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the leaf's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the leaf of Chimaphila umbellata, distinct from other plants that share the name wintergreen.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Chimaphila umbellata leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. Choose the alcohol-free glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is pipsissewa the same as wintergreen?
No. One of pipsissewa's old folk names is bitter wintergreen, but it is a different plant from true wintergreen. True wintergreen is Gaultheria procumbens, the plant famous as the source of oil of wintergreen and its minty flavor, whereas our product is the leaf of Chimaphila umbellata, prince's pine. Although both belong broadly to the heath family, they are different plants with different profiles, and our extract is not wintergreen oil, wintergreen flavor, or methyl salicylate. Pipsissewa is also different from spotted wintergreen, which is Chimaphila maculata, a closely related plant in the same genus but a distinct species. Our plant is Chimaphila umbellata. We label the product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between pipsissewa, true wintergreen, and spotted wintergreen.
How do I use Pipsissewa liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The alcohol-free glycerite and the tincture are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Pipsissewa extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
As with any herbal supplement, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. Pipsissewa naturally contains arbutin, a compound also found in bearberry (uva-ursi), so it is best used in moderation and not for prolonged periods. It is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner. If you take any prescription medication - including medicines that affect fluid balance - or are managing a kidney or urinary condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Handling the fresh plant can irritate the skin in some people. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
