Plantain (Plantago major) is a rosette-forming perennial of the plantain family, Plantaginaceae, native to Europe and northern Asia and now naturalized almost worldwide along paths, lawns and roadsides. Its broad, oval leaves, 5 to 20 cm long, have smooth margins and three to nine prominent parallel veins that pull out as strings when the leaf is torn. From late spring it sends up leafless stalks topped by dense, narrow spikes of tiny greenish flowers that mature into capsules of small brown seeds. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
