Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis) is the southern prickly ash or toothache tree, a small deciduous tree of the citrus family, Rutaceae, native to the coastal plain of the southeastern United States from Virginia to Texas. The trunk is studded with corky, cone-shaped knobs tipped with sharp spines, and the pinnate leaves have glossy leaflets dotted with oil glands that smell of citrus when crushed. Small greenish flowers are followed by follicles with shiny black seeds, and the bark produces a numbing tingle on the tongue. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
