Frequently Asked Questions about Prickly Ash Extract
What is Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis) bark?
Prickly Ash is a spiny shrub or small tree of the citrus family (Rutaceae), botanically Zanthoxylum clava-herculis, and often called Southern prickly ash. The part used here is the bark. It carries a number of colorful folk names, including toothache tree, Hercules club, and tickle-tongue, which come from the distinctive tingling, numbing sensation the bark produces when chewed - a sensory characteristic of the plant. This is a bark liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. Despite its common name, prickly ash is not a true ash tree (Fraxinus); the two are unrelated. This is a whole-bark extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Zanthoxylum clava-herculis bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Which prickly ash is this, and is it Sichuan pepper or true ash?
Good questions, because the name causes several mix-ups. First, the species: our product is Southern prickly ash, Zanthoxylum clava-herculis. It is closely related to Northern prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), and the two are often used similarly, but they are distinct species; we label ours clearly. Second, Sichuan pepper: prickly ash belongs to the same genus (Zanthoxylum) as the culinary Sichuan pepper, and they share that characteristic tongue-tingling quality, but our product is a bark supplement extract, not the culinary spice. Third, true ash: despite the word "ash" in its name, prickly ash is not the true ash tree (Fraxinus), which is an entirely different and unrelated plant. You may also see the name "Hercules club" used for a different plant (Aralia spinosa); ours is the Zanthoxylum. We label our product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Prickly Ash liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Prickly Ash extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this before use. Do not use prickly ash during pregnancy, because it has traditionally been regarded as a circulatory stimulant and is best avoided in pregnancy; it is also best avoided while nursing. Because prickly ash has traditionally been associated with the circulation, use caution and speak with your practitioner first if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication. Some people may notice mild stomach upset with concentrated herbal extracts, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use if you are allergic to prickly ash. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
