Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) is a spreading perennial herb of the four o'clock family, Nyctaginaceae, native throughout the tropics and common across India as a plant of fields, roadsides and waste ground. Its slender, often reddish stems trail outward for a meter or more from a thick taproot, with pairs of unequal, fleshy, oval leaves. Tiny pink to magenta flowers sit in small clusters on long, wiry branched stalks, and the sticky fruit clings to passing animals. The Sanskrit name means "becoming new again", for its regrowth after the rains. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
