Frequently Asked Questions about Punarnava Extract
What is Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) root extract?
Punarnava is a creeping perennial plant of the four-o'clock family (Nyctaginaceae), botanically Boerhavia diffusa, native to India and warm regions around the world. It is a well-known herb in the Ayurvedic tradition, where its name Punarnava means "renewer." In English it is called red spiderling, tarvine, and sometimes spreading or red hogweed. The part used here is the root. The root naturally contains an alkaloid called punarnavine. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Boerhavia diffusa root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is punarnava the same as hogweed, and what is red versus white punarnava?
Two clarifications worth knowing. First, "hogweed": punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) is sometimes called spreading hogweed or red hogweed, but it is not the giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) or the common hogweed - those are entirely different plants in the carrot family (Apiaceae), and giant hogweed is a hazardous, sap-irritating plant. Our punarnava is in a completely different family, so despite the shared nickname they are unrelated. Second, red versus white: our product is red punarnava, which is Boerhavia diffusa; in Ayurveda the name "white punarnava" often refers to a different plant altogether (Trianthema). We label our product clearly by botanical name (Boerhavia diffusa) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with hogweed, with white punarnava, or with the powdered form.
How do I use Punarnava liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Punarnava extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Punarnava is not right for everyone. Do not use it during pregnancy. Traditionally, punarnava has a diuretic quality (it tends to increase urine output), so if you take a diuretic or blood-pressure medication, or if you have a kidney condition, talk with your practitioner before use. If you are nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
