Quassia (Quassia amara) is a shrub or small tree of the quassia family, Simaroubaceae, native to the lowland forests of Costa Rica, Panama, Brazil and the Guianas and planted as an ornamental across the tropics. It grows 3 to 8 meters with pinnate leaves whose red-winged stalks and veins contrast with the glossy green leaflets, and bears upright racemes of narrow, tubular bright red flowers. The pale yellow wood and bark are among the most bitter plant materials known. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
