Sappanwood (Biancaea sappan, long listed as Caesalpinia sappan) is a small thorny tree of the legume family, Fabaceae, native to India, Myanmar and Southeast Asia, where it grows in dry deciduous forest and is planted as a hedge. It reaches 6 to 10 meters with prickly branches, bipinnate leaves of many small oblong leaflets, and upright panicles of yellow flowers followed by flat woody pods. The heartwood is orange-red and yields the red dye brazilin, which colored textiles and food across Asia for centuries. We extract the dried heartwood.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
