Sappanwood is a liquid extract of the dried red heartwood of Caesalpinia sappan (also classified as Biancaea sappan), an Asian tree in the legume family (Fabaceae), known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Su Mu. The same heartwood is historically famous as a natural red dye. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-heartwood liquid extract carrying the wood's natural constituents, including the homoisoflavonoid brazilin, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced and each batch is gluten free. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Caesalpinia sappan heartwood; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
How does Sappanwood differ from Bonducella and from brazilwood?
Sappanwood is Caesalpinia sappan, and this product is its heartwood (Su Mu). It is in the same genus as our Bonducella (also called Nicker Bean), but that is a different species, Caesalpinia bonduc, and a different plant part - Bonducella is made from the seed, while Sappanwood is made from the heartwood. They are not interchangeable, and each has its own page. Sappanwood is also different from true brazilwood, Paubrasilia echinata (formerly Caesalpinia echinata), a related South American dyewood; our product is the Asian sappanwood, Caesalpinia sappan. One more useful point: sappanwood heartwood is widely used as a natural red dye (its pigment comes from brazilin), so you will also see it sold as a craft or dye material - this listing is the herbal liquid extract, labeled by botanical name and plant part.
How do I use Sappanwood heartwood liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. The extract carries the wood's naturally deep red-orange color, which may tint the liquid. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Sappanwood heartwood extract has a favorable toxicology profile - animal studies reported no acute or subacute toxicity, and the brazilin-based dye has been assessed as safe for consumer use - so it is considered low in toxicity at sensible doses. However, there is one important traditional caution: in herbal tradition Su Mu is a blood-moving herb, so it should be AVOIDED during pregnancy. Use caution and consult your healthcare practitioner if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication, or before surgery.
