Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is an upright annual of the sesame family, Pedaliaceae, domesticated in the Indian subcontinent and among the oldest oilseed crops, grown today across India, Sudan, Myanmar and China. It stands 50 to 150 cm tall with oval to lanceolate leaves, broader and lobed near the base, and tubular white to pale pink, foxglove-like flowers in the leaf axils. The oblong, grooved capsules split open when ripe to scatter small flat seeds in white, tan or black, which is the origin of the phrase "open sesame". We extract the dried seed.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
