Frequently Asked Questions about Sesame Extract
What is Sesame (Sesamum indicum) seed extract?
Sesame is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Sesamum indicum, one of the world's oldest cultivated oilseed plants (Pedaliaceae family). The black variety of the seed is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Hei Zhi Ma. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. It is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural constituents. Two important points: this is made from SESAME, which is now a recognized major food allergen, so it must not be used by anyone with a sesame allergy; and it is a seed extract, not the same as sesame seeds, tahini or sesame oil, which are separate foods. Please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Sesamum indicum seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as sesame seeds, tahini or sesame oil?
No - it helps to be clear. This is a liquid EXTRACT of the sesame seed, taken by the drop. It is not the whole sesame seeds you sprinkle on food, it is not tahini (sesame paste), and it is not sesame cooking oil - those are separate foods, used and sold differently. If you want the culinary seed, paste or oil, those are what you are after. This is specifically a seed extract from Sesamum indicum (the black variety is Hei Zhi Ma in Chinese herbalism). One thing they all share: they are sesame, so the allergy note below applies to any of them.
How do I use Sesame seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety and allergy information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Sesame right for everyone? Safety information.
Sesame is a widely eaten food and is generally very safe, but there is one very important caution: sesame is now recognized as a major food allergen (the ninth in the United States), and a sesame allergy can cause serious reactions, including hives, vomiting, and in some people anaphylaxis. Do NOT use this product if you are allergic to sesame, and stop use and seek help if you have an allergic reaction. A couple of milder points: sesame may modestly lower blood pressure, so take care if you use blood-pressure medication; and it may have a slight blood-thinning effect, so be aware if you take blood thinners such as warfarin. Sesame is safe as a food in pregnancy, but consult your practitioner before using a concentrated supplement. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
