Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a climbing perennial of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae, native to tropical and subtropical India, Sri Lanka, the Himalayan foothills and parts of Africa and Australia, where it scrambles through forest and scrub. Woody, spiny stems climb 1 to 2 meters with clusters of fine, needle-like green cladodes in place of leaves, giving a feathery look, and racemes of small fragrant white flowers followed by red to purple berries. Below ground is a cluster of up to a hundred fleshy, tapered tuberous roots, the "hundred roots" of its Sanskrit name. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
