Frequently Asked Questions about Shatavari Extract
What is Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) root extract?
Shatavari is a climbing plant of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae), botanically Asparagus racemosus, native to India and other parts of Asia. It is one of the most prominent herbs in the Ayurvedic tradition. The part used here is the root. In English it is sometimes called wild asparagus or Indian asparagus, and although it belongs to the same genus as the vegetable, it is not the garden asparagus you eat. The root naturally contains saponins known as shatavarins. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Asparagus racemosus root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is shatavari the same as garden asparagus, and is this a powder?
Two clarifications worth knowing. First, the plant: our shatavari is Asparagus racemosus, which belongs to the same genus as the familiar garden or culinary asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) - but it is a different species and a different plant, not the vegetable you cook and eat. Second, the form: shatavari is often sold as a dried powder (churna); our product is different - it is a liquid extract of the root that you take by the drop. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Asparagus racemosus) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with edible garden asparagus or with the powdered form.
How do I use Shatavari liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Shatavari extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Shatavari is not right for everyone. Do not use it during pregnancy. Shatavari has estrogen-like activity, so if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, talk with your practitioner before use. Because it is a member of the asparagus family, people who are allergic to asparagus (or related plants such as onion and garlic) may also react to it, so use caution if you have these sensitivities. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Shatavari (Asparagus Racemosus) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
