She Gan (Iris domestica, long known as Belamcanda chinensis) is the blackberry lily or leopard lily, a rhizomatous perennial of the iris family, Iridaceae, native to China, Japan, Korea and northern India and naturalized in parts of the eastern United States. It forms fans of sword-shaped, iris-like leaves 30 to 60 cm tall and sends up branched stems with orange flowers freckled in red that last a single day each. The seed capsules split in autumn to reveal shiny black seed clusters resembling a blackberry. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
