Spilanthes (Acmella oleracea) is the toothache plant or paracress, a low, spreading annual of the daisy family, Asteraceae, of South American origin, probably Brazil, and grown as a vegetable and ornamental across the tropics. It forms a mound 20 to 40 cm tall with purplish stems and opposite, oval, bronze-tinged leaves, and bears button-like flower heads of yellow florets with a red center and no petals, resembling small eyeballs. The leaves and flowers contain spilanthol, which produces a tingling, numbing sensation on the tongue. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
