Spiny Zizyphus (Ziziphus spina-christi) is the Christ's thorn jujube, an evergreen tree of the buckthorn family, Rhamnaceae, native to the Middle East, North Africa and the Sahel, where it grows in dry wadis, oases and savanna. It reaches 10 to 15 meters with drooping, zigzag branches armed with paired thorns, one straight and one hooked, and oval, glossy leaves with three prominent veins from the base. Small greenish-yellow flowers are followed by round, sweet, yellow to reddish-brown fruit about 1 to 2 cm across. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
