What is Sidr / Spiny Zizyphus (Ziziphus spina-christi) leaf extract?
Sidr is a thorny evergreen tree of the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae), botanically Ziziphus spina-christi, native to the drylands of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. In English it is called Christ's thorn jujube or Syrian Christ-thorn; in Arabic it is sidr, and its fruit is known as nabk. The part used here is the leaf. The leaf is naturally rich in saponins, which is why it foams in water and has long been used as a plant wash; saponins and flavonoids are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract taken by the drop, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Note that this is Ziziphus spina-christi, a different species from the jujube date (Ziziphus jujuba); and it is the leaf, not the seed or the fruit, which we offer as separate products.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ziziphus spina-christi leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this jujube, and is it the leaf, seed or fruit?
Worth being precise, because the genus Ziziphus covers several herbs we sell. This product is Ziziphus spina-christi, the sidr or Christ's thorn jujube, and the part is the leaf. That is a different species from the jujube most people know - the sweet red date, Ziziphus jujuba - which we sell as its own product from the fruit; and it is also different from Suan Zao Ren, the Chinese jujube seed used in traditional Chinese practice, which is Ziziphus jujuba seed. Within our own sidr range, we offer the seed of Ziziphus spina-christi separately as well, so if you specifically want the seed rather than the leaf, look for that item. One more note on use: sidr leaf is very widely used outside supplements as a hair and skin wash because of its foaming saponins; our product is an ingestible liquid extract, not a cosmetic wash. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so you know exactly which one you are buying.
How do I use Sidr leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Sidr leaf extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Sidr leaf is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated liquid extract is not the same as a casual traditional preparation, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use this product during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. Note that this is an ingestible extract intended for internal use; it is not a hair or skin wash, so if that is what you are looking for, this is not that item. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving.
