Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis, now also classified as Limnospira platensis) is not a true plant but a filamentous cyanobacterium of the family Microcoleaceae, which grows in warm, alkaline, mineral-rich lakes of Africa, Asia and Mexico and is farmed in open ponds in Hawaii, California, India and China. Under a microscope it appears as blue-green, spiral-coiled filaments a few tenths of a millimeter long that float in dense blooms. It has been harvested as a food around Lake Chad and ancient Lake Texcoco for centuries. The dried biomass is deep blue-green with a seaweed-like smell. We extract the dried algae.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
